ABOUT THE PENALTY AND OTHER PLAYS

2019 – RIO DE JANEIRO, LURIXS ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA

Exclusively composed of football-themed artworks, the exhibition is a gathering of 25 years worth of the artist’s reflections on this subject. Displaying a selection of 13 pieces, developed from 1999 to 2019, the show takes the line markings from the soccer fields out of their usual context, further exploring and modifying them.

The commonly known shapes are extracted from the drawings and hung on a gallery’s wall, acquiring new meaning. It is not their function, but their aesthetic value that becomes more evident, resembling minimalist pieces. “In 1993, I made my first sculpture that represented football; ever since, the theme reoccurred in different moments and mediums. In the beginning, it was about the field’s drawings, then the referee’s cards.. Those images have profound ties, both visual and emotional, with the Brazilian and the world’s population.”
